gETTIng SoCIAl The UCA’s guide to getting started in social media was issued to member pharmacies before Easter. The aim is to help as many pharmacies as possible to utilise social media to promote their pharmacy services and engage better with people in their community.
When you are using social media don’t forget to share your posts with UCA – for facebook tag ‘Ulster Chemists’ Association’ and on Twitter tag @ucatweets. Use the hashtag #ThinkPharmacynI if you can. That way we can see what you are posting and we can like and share to give you a boost.

DESPErATEly SEEKIng A loCUM? Pharmacies are reporting that locum pharmacists are in short supply across northern Ireland. UCA has put out a call to pharmacists to register on UCA
locumonline to help meet demand. If you are having difficulty sourcing a locum, please let UCA know as we may be able to help.

The handling Difficult Situations course provides your staff with the necessary skills and techniques to handle a number of difficult situations which can occur in the pharmacy; from shoplifting, to dissatisfied customers, to warring colleagues.
Knowing how to approach a situation can help your employees deal with the matter in a calm and effective way. This empowers the employee, but keeps disruption to a minimum. This short course can be run in a half day or evening and is a great way to improve the effectiveness your

lAUnCh of UCA PrE-rEgISTrATIon TrAInIng ProgrAMME UCA’s Pre-registration Training Programme is launched for 2017-18. our eight-day programme runs from September 2017 - May 2018. Each training day includes practice open- book questions on an assigned topic, interactive sessions on a range of
conditions and expert guest speakers. At every training session, there will be a focus on team working and presentation skills, with learning structured around clinical areas. There is also a dedicated group-work session to assist trainees to complete their portfolio of cycles.
Day 7 features a half day in-depth calculations sesion and Day 8 is a full mock open & Closed book exam - we want every student to approach the exam with full confidence.
Course tutor Sharon McEvoy was delighted with the feedback from this year’s cohort. ‘our aim was to provide a structured course covering a wide range of topics which are relevant to everyday practice, as well as covering exam preparation. I’m delighted that students have enjoyed the learning experience so much and that tutors have found that the training has ticked all the right boxes.’

The shocking events in Belfast on Thursday 6 April is a stark reminder to everyone of the vulnerability of staff working in community pharmacy.
The examples of violent incidents and increasing verbal abuse from patients is sadly becoming the norm. UCA has highlighted this

growing problem in the pages of Pharmacy in focus in recent issues and, in response to this latest incident, UCA President Cliff McElhinney called for an urgent meeting with Mark Timoney, Chief Pharmaceutical officer at Department of health.
UCA will keep you informed of the outcome of this meeting and will offer support and advice on how you can improve your safety. We would advise you to review your
security procedures and ensure that all staff are aware of what they should do in the event of an attempted robbery or violent incident.
you are also reminded to ensure that any safety and security equipment you have in your pharmacy is in working order and that CCTV is functioning correctly. for example, is the time correct and is it recording correctly?
CrIME PrEVEnTIon There is a lot you can do to help prevent crime from occurring in the first place. If you have any concerns about safety and security in your pharmacy you can contact your local Crime Prevention officer for advice. Just can the Police Service of nI on 101 and give your location. Crime Prevention officers can do a site survey and offer recommendations on security equipment and personal safety.
