Food News BURTS CHIPS

2017 marks 20 years of successful business in the South West for award-winning snack brand Burts Chips. Plymouth-based premium crisp brand Burts Chips is an artisan brand that prides itself on delivering the best flavours, formats and packaging to meet customer needs, plus we’re proud to have pioneered many firsts in the sector. With competitor brands swiftly following suit, it’s important for Burts to continue to push boundaries to provide a real point of difference for our diverse portfolio of customers.

It is no secret that the ‘better for you’ snacking market is booming. There is growing demand for a genuinely healthy product that also tastes great and doesn’t compromise on flavour. The ‘Better For You’ market is now worth approximately £158 million and Burts newly launched Quinoa Crinkles is set to lead the way in this growing category. With less than 90 calories per packet, and seasoned with natural flavours, the Crinkles feature 45% less fat1

, are gluten free and a source of fibre. This snack is an ideal product – particularly in hospitals, educational establishments, leisure centres and other locations where there is a need to offer healthier food choices.

Consumers are increasingly discerning when it comes to snacking, and this is driving the premiumisation of the snacking sector. As one of the first brands to tap into the trend for authentic ingredients with strong traceability credentials, Burts source the best British potatoes from the South West, slice and hand-cook them in small batches, and season them with the finest authentic flavours to produce delicious crisps. And importantly all Burts snacks are created using locally sourced ingredients whenever possible, creating a strong working relationship with other artisan producers in the South West but also fulfilling a growing consumer desire

to buy every day products with a good provenance.

Burts’ flavours include British Vintage Cheddar, Chorizo from the Good Game Company in Devon, Chillies from the South Devon Chilli Farm and Devon Roast Beef from The Well Hung Meat Company, which sources meat from local organic butchers. With the increased focus on traceability and premium ingredients, regional provenance is more important, particularly in a globalised market, and continues to be a strong selling point.

Two more new flavours joining the Burts line-up are Smoked Crispy Bacon and

limited-edition Burts Fish ‘N’ Chips. Once again both products will reflect Burts’ Devon heritage, such as high- quality bacon from local producer the Spoilt Pig. The limited-edition Fish ‘N’ Chip flavour not only taps into the 26% rise in sales for this British takeaway staple last year2

, we’ve also partnered

with Rockfish, a premium Fish & Chips takeaway and restaurant chain in Devon, to ensure the flavour is spot on.
