South Sands Ferry 2016 Memories
Last year was one of the busiest seasons we have had due, we believe, to generally a well behaved weather pattern; apart from a bad start at Easter which was very early, then the weather settled down to an excellent half term week in May and a good spell during the Summer Holidays. The generally good weather and the Brexit nerves certainly contributed to the most successful year since 2002 when we had two hotels flourishing at South Sands. Let’s hope that 2017 will also be as busy. If the road access does become a problem all the more reason to travel to South Sands by sea, no congestion, except during Regatta Weeks, but then what a sight the Ferry being chased by pretty sailing dinghies with multi coloured spinnakers.
As usual the private chartered trips were very popular. These
included weddings, evening pub visits, usually to the Crabshell. Also the ferry was able to help out in wreath laying ceremonies, culminating on 27th October with being invited to participate in the 100th year Commemoration Service of the Salcombe Life Boat Disaster in 1916. A very moving occasion and we were lucky to have on-board with us the author Roger Barrett and Adam Hart-Davis who gave us a very interesting account of what happened on that fateful day.
Those interested in booking the Ferry for an evening pub visit or a pre-dinner cocktail cruise, should organise their own party up to say 20 people, which is a comfortable number if you bring your own drinks and nibbles! The Ferry is licenced for a max of 30 passengers. If visiting a pub it is advisable to
book ahead, usually you can have “shore leave” of about 1 ½ to 2 hours over High Water. A popular excursion, in addition to the excellent pubs, is a “Fish and Chips” Cruise back from Kingsbridge to Salcombe, order ahead to The Cod Father on (01548 853319).
The season ended with a majority of warm sunny days for the final half term week. We had fewer “no show” days than previous years thanks to the good weather and fewer mechanical problems although we have a few modifications to make on the hydraulic drive system on the Sea Tractor this winter. Hopefully this will show even better results in 2017.
This year we plan to start operations on Saturday 1st April and run through to the end of October. Fares will be £3.70 per adult trip and £2.70 for a child (3 and over and under 16 years) Fares for “frequent” travellers” start at £2.50 per adult/trip and £2.00 per child/trip.
