Stagecoach

It is often said, “the very best way to see the South Hams is from the top of a double decker bus” - whether you go upstairs or down, it has to be the most relaxing way to enjoy exploring the area

Enjoy a great day out by bus

For a relaxed way to explore the best the South Hams has to offer why not go by bus? Stagecoach’s 3 service runs up to every hour, 6 days a week and has a twice-daily service between Dartmouth and Kingsbridge on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

Start your day in Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City, with a stroll around the Barbican and the newly redeveloped Royal William Yard before picking up the 3 from Royal Parade, right in the heart of the city.

From Plymouth the bus takes you to Modbury where you can stop off and browse its great selection of independent shops. Half an hour later you will arrive in Kingsbridge, dating back to the 13th century it is capital of the South Hams and home to a thriving arts and crafts community. On the first and third Saturday mornings of the month there is a fabulous farmers market full of local produce. From Kingsbridge, you can also pick up the ferry to Salcombe.

Once back on board enjoy the scenery as the 3 takes you from Torcross all along Start Bay and up to Stoke Fleming. There is a nature reserve at Torcross where you can observe rare marsh birds and waders. Slapton Sands was used as a training area and rehearsal for the D-Day Normandy landings. Blackpool Sands is a cove sheltered by high, wooded cliffs and rhododendrons bloom close to the beach in early summer. Strete and Stoke Fleming are charming villages with wonderful cliff walks offering some fantastic views.

At the end of its journey, the 3 arrives in historic Dartmouth, home to the Britannia Royal Naval College. Explore the tangle of streets around the harbour, such as the 17th century Butterwalk, and visit the independent retailers and speciality shops. Dartmouth also plays host to some amazing events, including music and food festivals and, of course, the world famous Dartmouth Regatta.

From Dartmouth you can also connect onto Stagecoach’s X64 service that will take you to Totnes and Exeter. In Totnes, you can pick up Gold and either return back to the start of your journey in Plymouth or head to Torbay.

A day of unlimited travel on the 3 and on all other Stagecoach buses in Devon costs just £7.70. An unlimited travel group ticket, which allows up to 5 people to travel together, is also available for only £15.40. Stagecoach also offer child add on day tickets for only £1 and up to 3 children can be ‘added on’ to each full price adult ticket.

From Monday to Saturday the first bus leaves Plymouth at around 7.30 in the morning, arriving in Dartmouth some two hours later. The last service back from Dartmouth is just after 6pm.

All fare and timetable information is correct as of March 2017 however we would advise visiting www.stagecoachbus.com before travelling. You can also follow Stagecoach on Twitter @stagecoachsw.
