South Devon’s new online marketplace, Pretty Local offers a simple way to buy your weekly shop with minimum food miles from trusty producers. Andrea Wilson, the founder of Pretty Local explains her online shopping concept: “It’s a hub of tasty ingredients, recipe ideas and producer stories where you can buy everything on your shopping list from fresh seafood and meat to dairy, fruit and veg plus cut flowers and store cupboard essentials at the click of the button.”
Andrea, who lives with her young family near Salcombe, aims to make South Devon’s top quality food and drink more accessible by encouraging people to reconnect to where their food comes from. “I have created Pretty Local to be a one-stop shop that supports the fabulous producers, farmers, fishermen and growers on our doorstep.”
Finest Cuisine
Liz Turner believes in making things personal. Her first question is what foods and flavours her guests love. She then sources the finest ingredients from the best local producers, making sure quality comes first.
Liz meets with her clients to create a bespoke menu of their choice, using only the finest ingredients. “I dig deep to find out what sort of things would really make their time special. It's different for everyone”, she explains. Last night, she tells me, her guests, who like to follow a theme, went Scottish: Cullen skink, local venison followed by cranachan with plenty of whisky and they were a very happy bunch.
The former Le Gavroche chef moved from London to Devon with her young family. After 25 years in the industry, her passion for food and cooking has never faded.
“I enjoy cooking, but I also really love looking after people”, she says. Families will often ask her to come back year on year. She's been cooking for one particular family for nine years. “There are 18 of them” she says. “Every year there are new additions. I see the babies grow and have a real bond with the children. They make me fairy cakes when I come and we all muck in to make pizza. In fact, one of the kids likes to join me as second chef whenever possible.”
“Often, when working with a group or a family over a week's holiday, I will prepare the first night as they've arranged”, she explains. “Then I'll chat to them as the week goes on. They might have gone fishing and brought home loads of sea bass and mackerel that they want me to cook. The weather might be amazing and I can prepare a barbecue feast they stick on the fire and cook themselves after a day at the beach, or I might leave them some 'heat and serve yourself' dishes for convenient evenings”. She's as comfortable cooking fine foods for the Duke and Duchess of Somerset as she is for a wild hen party.
Cost is a factor that scare many people away from hiring private chefs, but Liz reassures me that it often costs less than eating out, without the hassle of getting there and back and having to keep everyone entertained for as long as they want to be at the table. At home, everyone can relax and go at their own pace. There are simple charges that are honest and reflect the work and the ingredients used. The key to the equation is choice. You can have as much or as little as your choose.
How does Pretty Local Kingsbridge work?
Each week the website is updated by the growers and producers with their new seasonal local produce.
Orders placed up to midnight on a Wednesday will be delivered to your chosen collection point or your home on the Friday of the same week.
The local suppliers pick, prepare, catch and make your selected produce on the Thursday, which means that there is no food waste, as everything is prepared especially for you.
