Start & Prawle Points come and find out who keeps you safe along this coastline

Come and find out by taking a guided tour around the only lighthouse in Devon open to the public and see the panoramic views from the lantern room at the top.

What’s a lighthouse like inside? Watching everyday

Discover how since 1836, when it first flashed its warning light from the end of one of the most exposed peninsulas along the south Devon coast, its beams and booms have been warning sailors of the notoriously hazardous waters around Start Point and the infamous Start Point tidal race.

Over centuries, the Start Point to Dartmouth coastline has become strewn with shipwrecks of all shapes and sizes, from warships and schooners to cargo ships, steamers, submarines and emigrant ships, many involving locals in rescues and recovery of lost cargo. After countless disasters, 40 men constructed this welcoming safety beacon which still stands the test of time; as important today as ever with some 13,000 commercial vessels passing within 20 miles of Start Point each year.

Take a breath of sea air, drama, history and nature when you visit Start Point Lighthouse and climb the tower to hear breathtaking stories about storms, shipwrecks and lighthouse living – a truly enlightening experience!

Start Point Lighthouse is open for guided tours throughout the year and for school and other group visits by prior arrangement.

From our vantage point 200 feet above the sea, we maintain a visual, VHF radio, radar and computer assisted watch every day of the year during daylight hours. In 2016 we made seventy one reports ranging from dolphin sightings to more significant events where we supplied information to the Coastguard to assist rescue operations. Every year we log about 17,000 passing vessels and vulnerable craft. Watchkeepers also keep a watchful eye on users of the coast path and livestock in our sector. Our station is wholly run by highly trained volunteers and funded by the generosity of our visitors, and the local community.

We operate a weather station and two webcams. We supply actual weather conditions on request by phone and VHF, and via our website (www.nci-prawlepoint.org.uk) which provides more information including our contact details and link to our Facebook page.

The Lookout is situated at the very tip of Prawle Point on the South West coast path at the southernmost point of Devon with fantastic views from Bolt Head to the west and Peartree Point near Start Point to the east. It is a wonderful venue with ever-changing weather conditions and is a superb viewpoint to see passing vessels and wildlife.

National Coastwatch - PRAWLE POINT We keep daytime watch 365 days a year on the sea and along the coast as part of the local Search and Rescue system.

You are welcome to visit our Lookout and Visitor Centre.

Please include Prawle Point in your itinerary and visit our informative, interesting, and free interactive Visitor Centre. You will also be made most welcome in the Lookout to talk to the watchkeepers.
