South Shields starts a new chapter


South Shields is benefitting from a £16 million cultural centre featuring an iconic circular facade created with the Kingspan TEK Cladding Panel. Creating a curved structure can pose a challenge, but the Kingspan TEK Cladding Panel was successfully engineered to provide


a smooth, highly insulated exterior envelope. To achieve this, the structural insulated panels (SIPs) were designed and factory cut into narrow widths. This allowed them to be quickly and easily fixed to the concrete frame.

The exterior of this iconic building was suffering with high levels of damage, includ- ing salt ingress and excessive cracking to the render and brickwork. Salt Inhibitor was used as a ‘masonry salt blocker’ and applied to the exposed brickwork. Large areas of the render were repaired with Restoration


Render and the deep section repairs were completed with Remmers Betofix R2, a fast curing, high strength concrete repair mortar. OS Concre Fill and Impregnation Primer were also applied prior to the application of the final protective coating system.

Industry-leading PVC-U systems supplier, The VEKA UK Group, has been awarded membership once again of the national crime prevention initiative, Secured by Design (SBD), for both its VEKA and Halo brands. The VEKA UK Group partnered with Secured by Design several years ago and has maintained its strong relationship with the team, thanks to a shared ethos of designing out crime at


the product development stage. Secured by Design was established in 1989 and works to reduce crime by bringing Police Forces, developers and planners together at the design stage.
