he teared up in front of me. A seventh-grade teacher. I told her what I am trying


to do. I told her about when my mother and I


would kneel at my bedside and pray “Now I lay me down to sleep…” Looking back now, I realize that changed


my life. Thank you, Mom, thank you. I didn’t get it until now. You don’t have


to go to church to pray. It’s just you and God anywhere in the world at any moment. Prayer dignifies the moment and nourishes one’s understanding of right and wrong. It is more than conscience… Church is great for many, but for many


others, it is intimidating. That’s really okay. Churches have inspired preachers who can reach you deep within, and many who don’t. If you don’t find the right one for you, then you must move on until you do. There can also be friends whom you


trust…friends who act unselfishly…who mat- ter. Paths can cross anywhere in the world, and spiritual magic can happen — a spiri- tual connection that forces you to look up and ponder the infinite. Hands go limp, cell phones drop and fingers intertwine in prayer. I had the honor of being asked to give

the keynote address on Veteran’s Day 2016 to 600 students and veterans in a church. As a former Navy frogman, my life’s journey led me to this moment. I gave them all I had. I served their moment. And it all started with a “Now I lay me


down to sleep…” Hope you are watching, Mom.


Chris graduated from Yale and became a Navy frogman. He was an officer in Underwater Demolition Team 21, which eventually became Seal Team 4. Aſter the Navy, Chris worked in retail in various stores including Lord and Taylor, Brooks Bros. and J Crew. He and his wife, Christina, now run one of the most successful independent women’s accessory stores in the country. Chris is active with charities for the poor and others and leads the “No Walls” Bible study.
