You Look Just Fine

DESPITE THE DAILY BATTLE SHE PHYSICALLY ENDURES WITH SYSTEMIC LUPUS, TARI HAPPY HAS AMAZING STRENGTH OF FAITH OVER CIRCUMSTANCE.

BY LYNN SCHNEIDER PHOTOGRAPHY BY SEBASTIAN ALSINA T

ari is married with a family and worked full-time prior to the year 2009, when she began to experience symptoms later identified as lupus. Various surgeries were re- quired that naturally affected her finances, including a three-year batle with Social Security to get disability benefits. Lupus is an autoimmune disorder that can cause fatigue, widespread aches

and joint pain, migraines, fogginess, memory detachment and more. Systemic lupus, however, also has the ability to atack and destroy an individual’s organs. No mater the type of lupus, it presents with a variety of symptoms, making the diagnosis difficult to pinpoint. It may ultimately trigger other autoimmune diag-

noses, but this can vary depending on the individual. Oſten those with lupus show no outward signs and may look completely fine. The most unfortunate aspect of lupus is that it cannot be cured. At best, it can be maintained

by a litany of pharmaceutical approaches to minimize pain and discomfort while slowing down its inevitable progression.
