W
hen Yolanda Beckers and her family arrived in Naples 25 years ago, integrative healing methods were a relatively new concept. Bringing more awareness to the community became a natural
task for them. They opened their home for meditation and healthy living classes for 22 years and three years ago established a non-profit organization called The Health and Wellness Sanctuary of SW Florida. Their vision was to empower people to live healthy, conscious and spiritually aware lifestyles. Yolanda believes that healing is an integrative process of body, mind/emotions
and soul. All three aspects are essential for becoming whole. Once you realize that an illness can be part of stagnated energies caused by emotions, you look at the disease from a totally different perspective. Living a stressful life for too long has a negative effect on your state of mind, thus affecting your breathing, organs and blood flow. The approach they take is called interactive healing. First, they spend sufficient
time with each person to develop an understanding of the root cause of the problem. Someone might come in with lung problems, and aſter the first appointment it is discovered that the issue is in the liver and not the lungs. Each individual is different, and thus each treatment plan has to be totally individualized. The sanctuary teaches that the body has seven main energy fields, each one
representing a particular quality. These energy fields can be under- or overactive and need to be balanced. Once balance is achieved, the body’s healing power will take over. The stresses of modern life can lead to illness and disease as mental, emotional
and physical health are thrown out of balance. The organization teaches Raja yoga, a form of meditation with no rituals or mantras that can be practiced anywhere at any time. The spiritual awareness it produces provides the power to choose good and positive thoughts over negative and wasteful ones. Practitioners start to respond to situations, rather than just reacting to them. They begin to live harmoniously, creating healthy relationships with themselves and others, which leads to positive lifestyle changes. Yolanda teaches the principles of Qi gong, a set of very gentle and easy-to-learn
movements that bring a person in touch with the universal life force and increase their energy. Benefits include lowered stress, reduced pain, beter digestion, restorative sleep and greater physiological control, meaning that aspects of the body that were imbalanced or out of control begin to normalize. The organization also promotes the importance of a healthy diet. Eating a poor diet reduces physical and mental health. A diet that has essential fats, protein,
complex carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals will increase your immunity. The digestive system can be compromised and may need cleansing to facilitate proper absorption of nutrients. By providing guidance in alternative
healing methods, The Health and Wellness Sanctuary of SW Florida hopes to provide the community with a beter, healthier and happier way of life.
