NCH Brookdale Rehab Hospital Helps Patients Recover from Strokes
BY ROBIN F. DEMATTIA
S 26 March - JULY 2017
troke is the fiſth leading cause of death in the United States and a major cause of adult disability, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
About 800,000 people in the United States have a stroke each year. And one
American dies from a stroke every 4 minutes, on average. A stroke happens when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, causing brain cells
to start to die within minutes. If certain brain cells die or are damaged, symptoms start to show in the parts of the body controlled by those brain cells. “There are different types of strokes and different outcomes from having a stroke,”
says Dr. Supriya Parowski, DO, a physiatrist with NCH Physician Group working at the Brookdale Center for Healthy Aging & Rehabilitation. “Depending on the severity and where the stroke is located on the brain, people may lose some function or the ability to live independently.”
