Now she’s one of the dogs’ favorite volunteers as she brings them “real bacon” once a week (leftover from her part-time job working at a hotel).
When Winfree reaches down to pick a black dog up, it excitedly wiggles and frantically licks her face. She loves interacting with the animals, but her favorite task is taking dogs to the nursing homes.
“I enjoy that. They (residents) love it and I hope someone will do that for me someday,” she said.
For people who prefer cats, there’s also a lull in individuals who want to work with cat socialization.
“A lot of times we get a cat in and it hasn’t been held, isn’t used to people, so cat socialization teaches it to interact with people
and makes it more adoptable,” Carter said.
The shelter is also always in need of donations to its thrift store. The Humane Society of North Central Arkansas operates a thrift store and it is one of the main revenue sources for the nonprofit outside of donations and grants.
If it’s a large item, the nonprofit will pick it up for free you just need to call and schedule a few days in advance.
Clothes, appliances, housewares and furniture are always in demand, said Carter.
Now is the perfect time to clean out your closet and find items that are “useable or resellable.”
“Spring cleaning is a good time,” said Carter. “Out with the old clothes and in with the new.”
The thrift shop at the Humane Society of North Central Arkansas features an assortment of items. All proceeds help to fund the no-kill animal shelter.
