While there is often a boost of volunteers around the holidays, nonprofits need help year-round. Nationwide, volunteerism decreased 2 percent between 2011 and 2015, the latest numbers available for the Bureau of Labor Statistics. But local nonprofits say if you have the time — any time — they will take it because they constantly need more help.

People don’t always realize the breadth of volunteer opportunities available, said Carolyn Carter, shelter manager.

Volunteers choose what they want to do, so if they are afraid they will end up cleaning out cages, they shouldn’t be. Volunteers can walk dogs, work with cat socialization, help with office work, train the animals, take them to nursing homes, sort or price items in the thrift store, and more.
