OF THE
April showers bring magical waterfalls.
Arkansas is known as The Natural State for a reason, said Leah DiPietro, Arkansas Tourism communications
manager.
In 2015, the latest numbers available, 28 million tourists came to soak up Arkansas’ beauty.
“Our mountains, rivers, lakes and streams offer plenty of opportunity for hiking, boating, swimming, rock climbing, canoeing, mountain biking, and so much more,” she said.
Part of that beautiful landscape includes waterfalls. While spring rains can dampen some spirits, the rains result in gushing cascades and stunning waterfalls. This is the season to get out and enjoy a waterfall especially after a heavy rain. So grab your hiking boots, pack a picnic and GPS device, and explore Arkansas’ natural wonders. Here are eight waterfalls to consider:
The Glory Hole is a waterfall found in the Boxley Valley in northern Arkansas. 10 Living Well i March/April 2017
Hemmed-In Hollow boasts a 210-foot waterfall. The Buffalo National River in northern Arkansas was established in 1972, and flows freely for 135 miles and is one of the few remaining undammed rivers in the lower 48 states.
Glory Hole
One of the most famous waterfalls in Arkansas is Glory Hole, located in Newton County in the Ozark National Forest.
What makes it unique is the waterfall is formed by a stream that flows through the roof of an overhang cave that eroded over time. If there’s been a heavy rain, you may see several cascades along the hike which provide plenty of photo opportunities.
The Buffalo River Chamber of Commerce warns that the waterfalls
are fairly remote, so don’t hike alone. In case of an emergency call the National Forest Service at (870) 754-2864 or the Newton County Sheriff at (870) 446-5124.
Directions: Trailhead is off AR Highway 16, 2.2 miles west of Edwards Junction (the intersection of AR highways 21 and 16). This is a moderate hike (2 miles) without great elevation changes until the final section which winds down to the entrance. The last segment is uneven and can be damp near so wear appropriate shoes and becareful.
