Companion planting is a method to consider when designing your garden; it’s a handy way to deter pests naturally.


“With companion planting, you can put rosemary with carrots to deter pests. It helps the carrots. Lavender and onions planted together will protect onions. Marigolds are good for everything, including tomatoes. Plant a rim of marigolds around the vegetable garden and it helps deter pests,” said Culpepper.


Chives should be planted near berries, carrots, peas, roses and tomatoes, because they deter aphids and Japanese beetles.


Plant garlic near cabbage, roses and tomatoes, but keep them away from peas and beans.


It’s important to follow planting schedules for your region, said Culpepper, who added that novice gardeners should not get discouraged, because gardening is a constant learning process.


But it’s rewarding, too.
