MUSEUM COLLECTIONS

Items relating to Rex Pierson We

are extremely grateful to Rex Pierson’s grandson David for the donation of a small personal archive relating to Rex, including his birth certificate and driving licence. Chief Designer of the Vickers Vimy and Wellington among others, Rex Pierson is a hugely important figure in the aviation history of Brooklands. It is therefore very exciting to be able to add objects and documents relating to his life and career to our collection.

Photograph of the Cordery sisters

Our thanks go to Ian Andrews for a lovely photograph of the Cordery sisters, Violet and Evelyn, showing them recording Violet’s completion of her 30,000-mile test at Brooklands on Monday 19th August 1929. Violet drove the 30,000 miles in less than 30,000 minutes in an Invicta and thus won the RAC’s Dewar Trophy. This was the second time she had been awarded the prize, which at that time recognised ‘the most meritorious performance by an automobile manufacturer in the [RAC] Certified Trials’, hav- ing completed a 5,000-mile test in 1926, also in an Invicta.

Vickers-Armstrongs Motor Club tankard

We were very pleased to acquire a Vickers-Arm- strongs Motor Club tankard from St Paul’s Church in Bushey. It was awarded to S J Clark for the 1938 Passenger Machine Trial. We are unsure what led to it being donated to a church jumble sale in Bushey, Hertfordshire but we are happy to add it to our collection as it represents the social side of life at Vickers-Armstrongs. This is a grow- ing area of our collection and trophies like this from the Vickers-Armstrongs Sports and Social

Update

The Cordery sisters record Violet’s 30,000 mile test at Brooklands.

Clubs will feature in our new Aircraft Factory displays.

Items relating to E H Walker and his career at Hawker

The working side of factory life is also a burgeoning area of our collection, particularly at Vickers- Armstrongs and Hawker. We were therefore very excited to accept items relating to the career of E H Walker who worked in the Experimental Department at Hawker Aircraft Ltd. Of particular interest is his Hawker Aircraft Ltd employee’s pass. Many thanks to Martyn Walker for this donation.
