CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

News

At our Committee meeting in January, Robert Hall was able to announce that we are ‘almost there’ with fund-raising for the Scoreboard, which we hope to have in place later this year. Members have regularly raised large amounts for projects that enhance the Brooklands experience, including the Test Hill railings, the Race Bays and many more, and your support and generosity really is appreciated. The common thread that runs through all these fund-raising projects has been the tireless efforts of Robert in leading them, and finding innovative ways to raise large sums of money – we all owe him a real vote of thanks.

In my last Chairman’s message I reported that I

t has been fascinating over the past few weeks to follow the developments at Brooklands on social media, as both the Museum and the BTM have maintained a steady stream of photos and videos to whet our appetites as the Finishing Straight reappears and the refurbished Hangar is re-erected. There is plenty more to see and read in this edition of the Bulletin, and we will continue to keep you informed as work progresses.

MEMBERS’ MATTERS Winter Draw

A

big thank you to all the members who returned Winter Draw tickets or made separate donations to our winter appeal. The sum raised was a fantastic £13,379 which is added to the previous year’s draw to make just over £28,000 towards our target to reinstate the Paddock Scoreboard. That’s nearly halfway and the rest is being accounted for by money raised from our events throughout the year – the talks, tours events and other donations.

Congratulations go to our winners James

Darycott, Janine Bye, R Mann and Vincent Green. A special thank you to Janine who has donated her prize back to the BTM to raise some extra funds – we are holding a blind auction for the prize of a day’s hire of a Morgan car from Brands Hatch Morgan via our e-mail newsletter and website.

Membership

Membership has stayed relatively steady over the last half of 2016 but we have had an increase of new memberships over 2015 with a total of 1,520 new ones during the year – welcome to you all.

our President, Sir Stirling Moss, was unwell and had been unable to be with us at our Annual Dinner in November. Subsequently Sir Stirling was admitted to hospital in Singapore on 22nd December with a serious chest infection, from which he has now recovered, but he is still convalescing in Singapore. We all wish him a full and speedy recovery and hope to see him again soon.

Neil Bailey News

Our non-renewal rate has also dropped, to around 22 per cent, which is good news too. This means our end of year figure is 5,734 member- ships. That is 228 up on the end of 2015 or in other words a four per cent increase, with Club level once again seeing the largest rise – of nine per cent to 2,299. When you join the BTM you not only have access to the Museum but a whole raft of extra benefits aimed at members, including our Classic Talks, Motoring Legends Talks, family events, car tours, coach trips, track days... in fact it really is Brooklands-plus! Tell your friends what great value being a Brooklands Trust Member is and hopefully persuade them to join.

New Year’s Day

It was a grey morning with the threat of rain at Brooklands as the New Year dawned. The build- ing works dominated the Museum but with extra parking in The Heights there were still around 700 cars at this year’s New Year’s Day meeting. We welcomed just under 40 new members on the day, most of whom signed up at the BTM tent in the Paddock. Our Outreach Team were kept busy
