It's Not A Sleeping Tablet My three-year-old is already aware of the

CBeebies App. She can fl ick and tick her fi nger around the tablet screen with great dexterity and skill. I am already wondering how I, as a parent, ensure she gets the most out of this most intuitive and mind expanding technology without it impacting on her health and social development.

Recent research has shown clear evidence that there is a link between children using tablets and smart phones and their sleep. This includes not getting enough sleep at night, reduced sleep quality and daytime sleepiness.

Evidence now shows that night-time sleep is just as important as healthy eating and exercise for children's development. Those who don't get enough sleep are more likely to be overweight or obese.

In the studies, even if the child did not use the device but had access to it, the sleep pattern was disturbed. This may have been due to anticipation of messages.

So what to do as parents. I would recommend no smart phones or tablets in the bedroom during the night or from half an hour before bed time. Relaxing or reading away from

a device is better before sleep. If an alarm is required, use a clock not a phone.

Taking away your teenagers' tablet and phone before they get into bed may spark a few arguments, but it could be worth it in the long run. Lack of sleep can make teenagers grumpy and bad tempered. It’s not a Sleeping Tablet.
