County Councillor Update

Despite a great deal of talk, disagreements and recent votes in Dorset’s Council chambers, I fi nd that local government reorganisation is not a topic which is being widely discussed by local residents.

There is no doubt in my mind that Council leaders across Dorset failed to set up a process of consultation, which really engaged the interest of people. However, residents are directly affected by the quantity and quality of services they receive locally. With the cutbacks in funding from central government, I believe that vital services such as adult and child social care can only be maintained with a more effi cient council structure. Fewer Councillors and fewer more streamlined Councils, working closely together, can make our money go further. For me the vote was not about preserving councillor jobs, but trying to get the best deal for local residents and preserving the levels of as many vital services as we can. Our nine local Councils have all voted and the result was six Councils in favour of change to two Unitary Councils, and three against. We now await the Government’s response.

If we do end up with two Unitary Councils in Dorset, our Parish Council will be even more important, providing a forum for very local decision making.

I know from my post bag that reliable bus services are very important to many residents and I am devastated to report that Dorset County Council is now proposing to reduce the number of supported bus services from 35 to just seven, withdrawing £1million in subsidies. My campaign with Poole colleagues to protect the number 18 bus was successful and I am continuing my campaign to save the number 3 bus, though I think we may have to accept a slight reduction in service. At the time of writing, the petition I launched has collected over 800 signatures and I have also met with the bus company. I shall continue the fi ght at Dorset County Council. I know just how devastating further cuts in our bus services will be.

The fi ght to get the youth club up and running continues and I do hope to have completed satisfactory negotiations with Lockyer’s School and be able to give a positive report next month.

If you would like details on these or any other local issues, please do contact me or drop into my regular surgery on the 2nd Saturday of every month in Corfe Mullen Library.

With best wishes, Susan Jefferies
