Quintessentially Norway

Our history dates back to 1893 when our founder Richard With became one of the nation’s maritime pioneers by providing a coastal transport service for local people. Hurtigruten means “express route” (hurtig = express and ruten = route) and has been an active part of these coastal waterways for 124 years.

At every port, you'll see people loading and unloading goods from the ship and you’ll also have the chance to meet local passengers going from one port to the next. With Hurtigruten, you won’t fi nd an ordinary cruise. Instead, you'll experience an authentic slice of local life on the Norwegian coast. We are a household name here and as much part of the coastal landscape as the ancient fjords themselves.

Norway’s Coastal Kitchen

Our chefs are passionate about quality local produce and will create three-course meals or lavish buff ets for Hurtigruten guests that centre around locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. On the Norwegian coast, fi sh and seafood are abundant, and especially fresh in the winter season, so when your ship docks, our chefs disembark to select the fi nest catch from the fi shermen quayside. You’ll be treated to local delicacies like cured lamb from Hellesylt or roast reindeer from Finnmark, freshly baked bread, homemade cloudberry jam, or aquavit ice cream from a local dairy. A smorgasbord of fl avour.
