Deciding on a nursing home is a big decision whether you’re doing it yourself or for a loved one. It is important to try and avoid the three ‘Plagues’ of a modern nursing home: boredom, loneliness and helplessness. I spoke to Pauline Morgan, the activity coordinator at Stanfield Residential home, and asked how these were tackled. Stanfield Nursing Home uses spontaneity, an individually catered approach and a whole host of activities!
INDIVIDUAL CARE AND ACTIVITIES AT STANFIELD
Te activities are mainly split into two different categories, one for mental stimulation and one for physical stimulation with some activities combining the two. Activities are available every day throughout the day and are eagerly awaited by the residents. Music, film, sports, memory games, puzzles, educational games, gardening and more!
General activities were popular with all residents but Pauline highlighted the importance of making a unique experience through urging the residents to come to her with any specific ideas and requirements, for
example one resident loved to sing so a karaoke machine was made available.
Although activities are important relaxing and ‘quiet time’ is just as important and is available in one of the various quiet rooms and also in the wonderful garden, a relaxing environment which, in the summer time, has calming music, a tranquil water feature and a bubble machine in order to cover all of the senses.
Creating a tranquil and relaxed environment with themes and many activities throughout the home is an approach that has been adopted by Pauline and Stanfield home. Te objective is simple, to make Stanfield Nursing Home their home not a home.
