upper lip, under arm and intimate waxing,” Lilliane adds. “Use Strip Wax for larger areas of the body that are generally less sensitive and have finer hair growth. But remember there are always exceptions to the rule and a therapist that knows how to use both waxes and match them to their clients’ needs will always provide the best results!”

Alongside recent developments in the world of Hot Wax, brands have also paid particular attention in creating complementary products to help minimise the level of discomfort during treatment. After all, the intimate area is sensitive and delicate so requires a more gentle approach, which is why the latest pre- and post-wax products ensure a fully comprehensive treatment protocol to help protect the skin.

“When using a Hot Wax that includes an oil in the system, it tends to be less painful because you don’t have a pull on the skin,” says Hennessy Trainer, Audrey Heffernan. “Oil is also more soothing on the skin and less erythema will appear after the treatment.”

“Waxing sensitive areas such as the bikini need to be carried out with extra care to ensure maximum comfort for your client,” comments Trish. “Waxperts Hot Wax should always be used with Waxperts Pre Wax Oil to ensure the wax only sticks to the hair and not the skin. Always leave the lip of the Hot Wax in a hair-free area to ensure easy removal and work on multiple small areas at once not only to increase the speed within which you can carry out the treatment, but also to ensure you can remove in one clean movement.”

Client comfort Understandably, the thought of an intimate wax can initially leave many feeling a tad nervous – whether clients are concerned about the pain factor or the potential embarrassment of exposing a part of the body that is kept hidden for the majority of time. To ensure your clients feel comfortable at all times, a great

waxing professional has to be confident in the treatment they are performing. Therefore, mastering the art of intimate waxing is a must to ensure longevity and success.

“I think the best advancement in intimate waxing has to be the education that is now available to beauty professionals which allows them to up- skill and learn new techniques to do an even better wax treatment,” says Trish. “A great wax treatment needs a premium product that delivers the best results, and a highly skilled beauty professional. Both are highly important in equal measure.”

During your intimate wax training, the importance of strict hygiene practices will be highlighted. To help alleviate any client concerns regarding this issue, it’s imperative to provide a safe and sanitised environment for your treatments.

“Anytime you compromise the integrity of the skin, you're going to increase your risk of infection and waxing can pull off tiny pieces of the skin's outermost layer, creating a portal through which bacteria can enter the body,” says Karen Colborne of Adam & Eve Wax. “What's more, the process creates inflammation, which can trap bacteria beneath the skin. All of this sets the stage for skin infections including folliculitis (infection of the hair follicles), and ingrown hairs.”

“So how do we help dodge this minefield? Firstly we encourage our students to be proud of their salon/beauty rooms, it is important to portray a welcoming and comfortable environment, but at the top of the list is to ensure that their rooms are clean and hygienic,” Karen continues.

“Always wear disposable gloves during the treatment, to prevent cross contamination,” Karen advises. “The tools used for waxing could spread any number of diseases or skin conditions from one person to another. Do not use tools more than once before sanitising, to prevent microorganisms being transferred from client to client.

“The skin has a small amount of bacteria in it naturally. Heated wax is a bacteria playground. The danger comes to play when the bacteria from the contaminated wax comes in contact with someone else. So no double dipping, always use a clean, sterilised applicator every time you dip into the wax.

“Towel management – it is imperative to wash all towels at 60 degrees plus, to ensure most bacteria is killed off. I use a new towel and fresh couch roll for each client.

“As part of the aftercare offered to clients, I advise [them] to purchase antibacterial soap to use after their intimate wax treatment, along with regular application of our after wax lotion. This will ease irritation and help ward off potential infection.”
