COVER STORY “The school category has really

taken off,” MacTiernan tells D.O.M. magazine. “We are going to have something like 22 college teams this year.”

AMC is a great opportunity for students. They get to network with industry veterans, show off their skills and talents, and learn what it takes to go that “extra mile.” “People even get hired at AMC,” says MacTiernan. “A retiring U.S. Coast Guard team member was hired by NIDA last year. It’s good for students as well. The schools don’t send students who are barely getting by in their classes. They send the best of the best. It’s a good way to showcase their skills and knowledge. Employers see possible future employees preforming in a controlled high-pressure environment. We even have an airline that has requested access to the students at the competition this year.”

William F. “Bill” O’Brien Award For Excellence in Aircraft Maintenance: FedEx Team Indianapolis

2016 AMC The AMC has been growing each year. MacTiernan tells us that this year is no exception. There are 59 teams competing (up from 39 last year). There are 24 competition events (up from 21 in 2015). FedEx Team Indianapolis is returning to defend its championship. AMC 2016 will take place April 5-7 in conjunction with MRO Americas in Dallas, TX. The AMC is truly an international

event. Teams come from all over the world to compete. The international teams competing this year include Chile, Brazil, Australia, China and Canada.

THE PURPOSE OF AMC MacTiernan says that the purpose of AMC isn’t to show that one team is better than another team or that one airline is better than another. Yes, winners are announced and prizes are awarded each year. But it’s about a lot more than that. “We are stewards of our craft,” he tells D.O.M. magazine. “The only way that we are going to promote and advance our profession is by letting the public, and to an extent our industry, know what we do. And they don’t. They see an airplane take off. They see a rocket launch. They see a helicopter drop fire retardant on a fire. This is an opportunity for us to speak out as a whole to showcase our craft. We are all brothers. We are all craftsman. AMC is a group of people speaking out for the same cause. Being the only venue in the world like this, it is the perfect opportunity for us!”
