industry ignores a fundamental truth — one that ARSA repeats regularly on Capitol Hill — good safety is good business. Put another way, even if they didn’t have government regulators looking over their shoulders, aviation business have a huge economic motivation to ensure the highest standards of safety. It’s for that reason — not the ever-
growing volumes of aviation “safety” rules — that we are living through the safest period in the history of civil aviation. Through ingenuity and the willingness to take business risks (and yes, even work with the government), maintenance providers, airlines, manufacturers and others in our industry have protected the lives and livelihoods of countless passengers, safely delivered millions of tons of cargo and kept the world economy moving.
Our industry is in a period of
signifi cant political risk. Congress is once again battling over reauthorizing the FAA. This bill has been trumpeted as “transformational,” but we’ve seen too many times that such legislation is merely a chance for activist legislators to weigh down the aviation community with new mandates. ARSA works constantly to tell our industry’s story on Capitol Hill. Repair stations are major contributors to the aviation industry’s outstanding safety record. We create jobs in communities throughout the country. The world can’t fl y without us. The biggest risk to our success is for government to weigh us down. The over-regulation of our
industry is a symptom of a bigger national problem. While we might not be able to take Big Brother off the wall, we can at least remind him that we’re an industry worthy of the world’s trust.
