COVER STORY MacTiernan feels so strongly about

the purpose of AMC that he does all of this on his own free time. Right after the competition each year, he sends personal thank you letters to each team that are signed by him and Goglia. He then starts planning for the following year. It’s a yearlong eff ort — all on his own dime. He takes vacation days each year for the event. He pays for his own meals and lodging. “It’s a true nonprofi t,” he says. “Everything that we get in regards to sponsorships goes straight to paying the bills. Sure, it would be nice to get a stipend. But it’s about more than that to me. I really believe that regardless of where we are at, we all have a responsibility to make our profession better for those coming behind us. Not everyone is going

to launch a magazine like D.O.M.. Not everyone is going to launch a maintenance competition. But we can all help out in our own ways. This is MY way of giving back to our industry.”

HOW CAN YOU PARTICIPATE? If you are a mechanic, the best way to participate is to put together a team. Then you can see what all of the hype is really about. However, the teams couldn’t compete without industry support. It takes a lot of resources to help put this together. Maybe you can volunteer your time? Maybe you would like to help put together an event for the 2017 competition? Maybe your company would like to

become a sponsor and help support the AMC fi nancially? After all, the AMC is a non-profi t organization that relies on donations to keep it going. And hosting an event like AMC isn’t cheap. (Have you ever had to pay $35.00 for a cardboard trashcan for your booth at a trade show?)
