A few of the early entrants that imitated Uber closely


have already ceased operations, one running afoul of FAA regulations, the airplane ridesharing startup Flytenow. This company wanted to bring together private pilots and those who wanted to fl y with them but this violated the FAA stipulation that private pilots can not advertise and be compensated for fl ights. There are some minor exceptions to this but the FAA always said that you cannot even advertise that you are fl ying somewhere and would like to share the cost of fuel. Flytenow attempted to have the FAA reexamine these rules but was unsuccessful. AirPooler had also been aff ected by this, but it seems to be operational by sticking closely to current FAA rules. Several other startups thatried setting up related services are also no longer functioning.


This leads us back a more standard business model in


aviation, building upon the fractional ownership, Jet card and air charter business entities. The Uberifi cation model adds value via the convenience of ordering or booking a fl ight via an app, as well as price compression because of ease of quick price comparisons. A number of companies are attempting to further reduce the cost of fl ying by selling individual seats on empty-leg fl ights at prices discounted deeply enough to contend with upper-class seat prices on commercial air carriers. If this succeeds, this may erode the higher-paying customers on commercial airlines, which will eventually have an outsized impact the airline industry. It will be interesting to see how this aff ects not only air charter pricing but the overall market for business/private jets. (If you are not a heavy user of a jet, why buy when you can rent a seat on demand?) While you are able to use an app to price or book a fl ight, the fi nal booking process often takes more time, and

Donald Duncan operated Duncan Aviation, an aircraft sales and support facility in Lincoln, Nebraska. He listened to their wishes. And in 1966, he acted by hiring Don Fiedler, an electronics engineer, as the company’s 17th employee. His job was to install and repair avionics equipment for a variety of business aircraft.
