TECH TALK

attained the ease of Uber, and may never do so due to the unique safety environment in aviation. However, they have made it much easier to order a seat on a jet, as well as brought down the pricing of such services. In order for aviation companies to match Uber, both Uber (and Google, Tesla, etc.) and aviation need to evolve to autonomous vehicles. Once this happens, and battery technologies extend the range and passenger capacity of such vehicles, the air charter and short- haul transportation businesses (auto, bus, rail and commercial aviation) will be disrupted in ways we cannot anticipate easily. Smart highways and smart skies will drive the next generation of products once they

get out of the testing phase and into everyday use, and will change the status quo and everyday life in dramatic unforeseen ways. It is easy to dismiss such claims,

but keep in mind that revolutionary changes are rarely predictable or linear. Autonomous vehicles will take much longer to enter the ground and air markets than expected, and will have their fair share of issues initially, but once they reach a certain point of quantifi able safe and reliable use, we will see the next revolution in transportation.

This is going to be fun to watch, and hopefully ride. (I need to speak with the editor of D.O.M. magazine to provide a budget for one of these 184s … for testing purposes).
