Encourage each player to seek individual sponsorship, and sell promotional opportunities to local businesses – sports clubs or gyms may be interested in boosting your fundraising total in exchange for 

SCIENCE AND MATHS

Science night Invite families to an evening of science fun, where they can watch and participate in fascinating experiments conducted by your science department. Include practical challenges, such as building towers from uncooked spaghetti, designing rockets from paper and straws; or the ‘egg drop’, which challenges teams to create a package that protects an uncooked egg from breaking when dropped from 10ft! Plant sale Running a plant stall is a great way to raise money, with a bit of biology thrown in! Most people stock up on summer plants from Easter to early July, so plan ahead. Request discounts or donations of surplus stock from your local garden centre or nursery – herbs are particularly popular. Alternatively, tie-in your fundraising to a learning project, working with pupils to grow from seed, potting up and selling plants once grown. Charge £2-3 depending on the size of the plant.

Grow a £1 Give each pupil a £1 coin and ask them to work in groups to ‘grow’ it! They could buy seeds and grow and sell plants; buy a bucket and sponge and offer a car-washing service; or purchase ingredients to make cakes for a bake sale. Children will need to work out their costs and  Pupils who are unable to take part simply return their £1 investment.

Teams can earn points for their performance in the challenges, for the amount of sponsorship collected, and for overall sportsmanship. Award prizes to the winning teams.

Stargazing night Find an expert to host the night on the Federation of Astronomical Societies’ website (fedastro.org.uk). If your expert can’t provide equipment, attempt to source this from local community groups. The BBC Stargazing Live website has an event pack available to download, with tips and ideas for activities to run. Sell tickets and provide a list of items that visitors should bring. Start your evening with a talk from your expert, or themed crafts, then venture outside to see which stars you can spot. Serve hot food and drinks to keep your guests warm and to boost revenue.
