As the war came to an end more people became interest-


ed in gardening as a profession. In 1936, the Niagara Parks Commission opened the Training School for Apprentice Gardeners, based on a similar program offered at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Kew, England. And so, the apprentice gardeners began turning what was once poor farmland into magnificent gardens.

Later named the School of Horticulture, a name it


retains today, the gardens became the outdoor classroom for students attending the three year diploma program in horticulture, which includes an intense academic portion. Students today are still responsible for the planting and maintenance of the 99 acres of gardens, providing them with necessary practical experience. During their first two years of the program students live in residence. The old farmhouse residence is located west of the old lecture hall, a railroad station moved to the property from Queenston Heights in 1938 when the railway was discontinued.
