KPMG sponsors
Company of the Year
Open to successful Solent companies with turnovers above £10 million, the award- winning Company of the Year must display the ability to think strategically, keep abreast of new developments in its industry and the wider economy, and illustrate sound plans for future growth
Winner: Churchill Retirement Living
Family-run and privately-owned, Churchill Retirement Living is the fastest growing company in the UK retirement housing market. It prides itself on building high-quality, purpose-built one and two-bedroom retirement apartments in desirable UK locations, fit for the needs of its elderly customers who are typically seeking an independent, safe and secure lifestyle.
The judging decision
Will Smith, KPMG office senior partner at Southampton, announced: “The judges were hugely impressed with this year’s very strong entry and had to work hard to identify the finalists. All should be rightly proud of their achievements.
“The winner stood out for: • Five years of consecutive growth with sector-leading margins
• A business ethos focused on their people, but based on sticking to the things they do well and getting the basics right … consistently
• Being a multi-award-winning business with an exciting immediate future.” Winning ways
The industry-experienced Churchill Retirement Living management team spotted the oncoming UK recession in 2007. It rationalised early, rode out the storm, began successful post-recession activity, and reinvested profits to expand operations.
The company also survived with a disciplined approach embedded within it, and a clear focus on product, margins and costs, explained chairman and CEO Spencer McCarthy.
“We are now very focused on delivering high quality at affordable prices, while not losing sight of our bottom-line” – nor its customers’ needs, such as a vibrant community spirit within Churchill retirement developments, which McCarthy describes as “our halls of residence for life’s post-graduates.”
