The Business Magazine
sponsors Corporate Social Responsibility Award
Most large businesses have a CSR policy, but the judges were looking at companies actually putting their policies into practice
Winner: Amey
By supporting Hampshire services including roads, railways, schools, waste disposal and airports, Amey helps create better places for people to live and work within and travel through.
Amey, with 21,000 UK employees, also has strong CSR principles, promoting local initiatives that benefit charities, community groups and hard-to-reach groups.
Comments of the judging panel
Tamsin Napier-Munn, The Business Magazine campaigns manager, congratulated both shortlisted companies for “their commitment not just at leadership level, but throughout their businesses; not only to their staff, but also to the wider community. They have instilled a sense of pride in their teams, invested time and effort into making a real difference to all involved.”
Award-winner Amey was highlighted for its “tireless commitment to giving back to the community in a variety of ways.” Amey has helped build a scout house, a BMX track, supported a youth football team, and run charity golf days and cycling challenges.
“Amey has supported the Hampshire Wildlife Trust, helped ex-offenders get back into work, and works with the Shaw Trust to help disadvantaged children. It invests 3% of turnover back into the local community, and impressed our judges with both the breadth and depth of the company’s commitment.”
The award-winner’s view
David Fawcett, Amey customer services manager, has a passionate CSR belief that companies have a duty to put something back into communities where they operate. “We need to make a positive difference to people’s lives, charities and community groups, and that’s what Amey tries to do. CSR is really important, probably more than ever today.”
“A lot of people talk about CSR, make plans, but the key is actually to do something. Go for it”. His advice was start small with one activity, and to build on the buzz, getting staff involved and motivated.
