Management Team of the Year

This award was for the management team that has driven its business forward using knowledge and creative ideas and developed strong leadership and teambuilding skills

Winner: CLC Group

Established in 1969 as a painting and decorating contractor, CLC has expanded to provide a comprehensive range of facilities management services to varied organisations throughout the UK. The Group has grown its maintenance service business organically by over 20% in each of the past two years, increasing its turnover from £78 million to over £120m while maintaining industry-leading margins. This is due to the commitment and leadership of the management team, some 15 of whom have demonstrated their confidence in the continued success of CLC by together taking a 30% stake in the business.

In the judging panel’s opinion

Dan Salanson, NatWest regional director, Solent noted a key winning factor: “What stood out was the depth and breadth of management involvement and engagement. From branch managers getting involved in board meetings to a share ownership scheme, there has been a culture of staff empowerment, engagement and retention.

“In addition, CLC had a successful transition in ownership while maintaining an impressive financial performance – not an easy feat.”

One feature of a winning management team

CLC executive chairman Peter Armitage revealed: “We try to give people as much responsibility as we can. We have 14 – branch offices, so these guys are actually running their own businesses in some ways, within the framework of the group. With their responsibility they commit to making decisions locally and that helps them build good relationships with local customers and so, when times get hard, customers stick with us. We have 85% repeat business year-on-year.”

Taking second-place . . .

Performance in People – established in 2000, recognised as one of the UK’s leading customer service consultancies. Judges’ comment: “The company has invested in its people and the reward has been high morale and retention.”

And gaining third . . .

CV-Library – Fleet-based CV-Library is now one of the UK’s largest online job sites with over 10.6 million job candidates. Judges’ note: “The management coped with overseas growth and continued expansion while always maintaining high customer service standards.”
