In the skies Te Air Force element of CFB Winnipeg is known as 17


Wing. Te Wing is host to three squadrons. Te 402 “City of Winnipeg” Squadron consists of four de Havilland CT- 142 Dash 8s, and is used for transport and training. Te 435 “Chinthe” Transport and Rescue Squadron consists of five Lockheed CC-130 Hercules, which are utilized for search and rescue as well as supply missions. Te 440 Transport Squadron also has detachments in Yellowknife. A 17 Wing detatchment is also located in Dundurn, Saskatchewan. On the ground

gade Group have their headquarters at CFB Winnipeg, with approximately 1,200 soldiers in 14 units falling into the bri- gade, whose reach stretches from the western border of Sas- katchewan into north western Ontario and Tunder Bay. CFB Winnipeg is also home to several schools, helping to


train future aviators. Te 1 Canadian Forces Flying Training School, the Canadian Forces School of Aerospace Studies, 3 Canadian Forces Flying Training School (located in Portage la Prairie, west of Winnipeg), Canadian Forces School of Survival and Aeromedical Training, and the Canadian Forces School of Meteorology. In addition to the schools, CFB Winnipeg is also home to


the headquarters for 1 Canadian Air Division, which oversees operational-level command and control of the Royal Canadi- an Air Force, and the Canadian NORAD Region. According to NORAD, “Te mission of the Canadian NORAD Region


is to provide aerospace surveillance, identification, control and warning for the defence of Canada and North America.” In the community


Not only has CFB Winnipeg contributed to national and


international defence operations, (along with domestic opera- tions in Canada) such as fighting fires and floods, it also con- tributes to the community it serves. Whether they’re in or out of uniform, members of the military find ways to give back, and CFB Winnipeg itself does so through causes such as the government of Canada Workplace Charitable Campaign, Sol- dier On and the Military Families Fund among others.
