The gilded altar of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. When the Spaniards arrived in the 1500s they were ap-

palled by the holiday, considering it morbid. Tose who ob- served the celebrations were confused; it appeared to them to be a festival that served only to mock the dead. Later, the Christians moved the holiday to Nov. 1 and 2 to correspond with their All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. Having evolved again, the modern-day version of the holi-

day more closely reflects the original Aztec celebrations. Nowadays, the Catholic diocese tends to encourage peo- ple to celebrate Day of the Dead while discouraging any cel- ebration of Halloween, which is considered a devil’s holiday. However, in Mazatlán children dress up in costumes and go trick or treating on the 31st of October and most of the nightclubs hold Halloween parties.

Mazatlán lives up to its name, offering tourists sun and sand, history and culture. You can wander from the Zona Dorada or Golden Zone, the location of most of the major hotels, shops, restaurants and bars, set alongside beautiful beaches with golden sand, or visit Old Mazatlán. The Centro Historico will take you back in time with its restored shops and houses. Shop the local markets, or stop in a cafe or plaza where the Mazatlecos (locals) gather. Plazuela Machado, the city’s original main square, is a vibrant area where you can spend an afternoon watching buskers, musicians and danc- ers from one of the benches or a nearby outdoor restaurant. The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, is a must-visit landmark. Built in 1890, the church’s gilded triple altar with murals of angels overhead is stunning.
