NewLeaf Travel credits Canadians for their success

By Tania Moffat F

inally, a low fare airline op- tion has gotten off the ground in Canada. NewLeaf Travel Company Inc. is up and run-

ning after cutting through all the red tape thrown at the founders when they first announced its arrival. Cana- da is a difficult place for any air travel start-up for many reasons, which is why this was the only major world market without an ultra-low-cost air- line — was, being the key word. On June 23, the NewLeaf team an- nounced that they would resume sales for flights to Canadian destinations. President and CEO, Jim Young, gave credit to the 16,000-plus Canadians who “purchased tickets and placed their trust in NewLeaf Travel Com- pany. We’ve accomplished a lot, and walked through many hurdles in or- der to deliver an ultra-low-cost travel service,” he said. NewLeaf Travel Company Inc. is

a privately-held Canadian company headquartered in Winnipeg. It pro- vides leisure travellers with low fares and unbundled travel options on flights operated by its partner Flair Airlines Ltd., a licensed Canadian airline with bases in Kelowna, Cal- gary and Hamilton. Flair Airlines, operational since 2003, has a strong safety record, and owns and operates a fleet of Boeing 737-400 passenger jets. Officially, NewLeaf is a reseller of air services and is not required to hold an airline licence, allowing it to provide Canadians with the low fares they deserve. Where will they take you? Most of the destinations offered are non-stop flights not currently offered

by the existing airlines, for example Hamilton, Victoria and Kelowna. Flights that do make a stop have only one, and you don’t even have to get out of your seat, which saves you time and money. NewLeaf sells directly to the public

through website gonewleaf.ca, which also saves customers money as they are not paying anything to other booking sites. Te company currently offers flights to 11 different Cana- dian destinations: Halifax, Moncton,

Hamilton, Winnipeg, Regina, Sas- katoon, Edmonton, Kelowna, Kam- loops, Abbotsford and Victoria. How do they do it?

Low fare flights are possible; you just need to decide what you can or cannot live without on your flight. One of the characteristics of an ultra- low-cost carrier is that fares are kept low by charging for extras, including things passengers may not be used to paying for. Te base advertised seat fare comes completely unbundled.
