ía de los Muertos is one of Mexico’s favourite holidays. It is a colourful celebration that takes place over two days. Although the Day of the Dead may sound a little mor-

Modern day festivities have their roots in celebrations that the Aztec people partook in some 3,000 years ago. Historically, the celebration lasted through the month of August and honoured a god- dess referred to as the “Lady of the Dead”. Te catrina dolls that figure prominently in the modern festivities are said to re- flect her image. Skulls, real or fake, have always been a prominent part of the holi- day imagery. Aztecs collected real skulls to display for their rituals perhaps because the
early indigenous peoples of Mexico embraced death instead of fearing it. Death was viewed as a rebirth leading to true enlightenment, which could be why people wanted to communicate with the deceased.
