The Piazza del Campo is the heart of Siena. Twice a year a bareback horserace is run here in the piazza (above and right).
the south across the ever-tidy rolling hills of the Chianti district, the Sienese, their longtime rivals, appear more to celebrate their town’s medieval heritage and unsullied beau- ty. Tey comfortably shape their daily life to a pace and style dictated by that earlier time. A visitor quickly falls in love with this quiet, unaffected town with its carefully preserved edifices and winding alleyways that straddle one or other of the town’s three hills. Like its rival, Siena has been named a UNESCO World
Heritage Site and is famous for its art, museums, cuisine and surrounding countryside. Its expansive, scallop-shaped square, Piazza del Campo, in the heart of the town, is cel- ebrated for its twice-yearly Palio, a dramatic bareback horse race which throws the centuries-old rivalry among the town’s (now 17) districts into high relief. A second major piazza, the Duomo, is home to the city’s magnificent cathe- dral and much ravishing art.
