erving the Winnipeg community for more than 90 years, Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Winnipeg pro- vides a military presence in the area, with thousands of soldiers and airmen employed there and living in


the surrounding community. Formed in April 1925, CFB Winnipeg (then known as


Royal Canadian Air Force Station Winnipeg) was one of the first air force bases in Canada, as military aviation had only gotten its start a decade earlier during the First World War. One hundred and thirty thousand air force members were


trained for the Second World War at CFB Winnipeg, as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Program. Te friendly confines of the wide open prairie skies made excel- lent training grounds for fliers before they headed overseas. From 1968 to 2004, the air force base shared its name with


the Army’s Kapyong Barracks so that the air force base be- came CFB Winnipeg (North) and the army base became CFB Winnipeg (South). In 2004, the Kapyong Barracks relocated to CFB Shilo near Brandon, Man., and the Win- nipeg base changed its moniker to its current title of CFB Winnipeg.
