Versatile Waterproofing Solutions for Car Parks

The Institute of Structural Engineers Standing Committee on Structural Safety (SCOSS) published their tenth report, July 1992 to June 1994, expressing concerns about the maintenance of multi-storey car parks (MSCP’s) and emphasised the need for planned structural appraisals by car park owners. This was followed by similar warnings in their 11th and 12th reports.

However, in 1996 a failure of a car park barrier in Watling Street MSCP in Canterbury, followed by the partial collapse of Pipers Row MSCP in Wolverhampton in 1997 where the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) identified poor maintenance as the major contributory factor, led to SCOSS and HSE subsequently expressing their concern about the risk of progressive collapse of some car park structures. This eventually led to the publication of ICE’s Recommendations for the Inspection, Maintenance and Management of Car Park Structures in 2001.

USL StructureCare, part of the £60m USL Group, firmly believe in championing the recommendations in these documents, and have for many years played an active part in industry presentations, steering committees and special interest groups. Indeed group Directors, John Taylor and Tim Whittaker, have together almost 50 years experience in the repair and refurbishment of multi-storey car park structures.

As the UK’s leading specialist in this niche market sector, USL have an unrivalled track record and unique approach to delivering structural repair projects to car park facilities. “We listen to our customers and have been for many years” says John Taylor. “It was clear that not only are our customers after a quality and reliable service at an affordable level, but if they can minimise their exposure to risk at the same time then that adds considerable weight to our value proposition”.

USL StructureCare have therefore proactively and strategically placed themselves in a unique position within the market, however this exclusive offering extends to many different facets of both the manufacturing and contracting business and has seen the company deliver some prestigious and sizeable projects recently.

“We are proud to have delivered the current winner of the British Parking Awards Best Refurbishment in Merryhill, West Midlands, which required extensive repair and refurbishment to the structural steel frame” comments Tim Whittaker. “The project also involved the removal and reinstatement of the 9000m2

mastic asphalt wearing surface to the upper deck following the application of an incompatible coating some years earlier”.

USL StructureCare have also recently extensively refurbished the BMO owned, Bon Accord Shopping Centre car parks in Aberdeen. “The car park required extensive yet sensitive structural repair” says Taylor, “including the use of sacrificial anodes to combat the onset of corrosion activity due to high levels of chloride contamination and corrosion activity levels. At Aberdeen, the client was particularly keen to source as many products from a single manufacturer, and of course USL bring a further unique benefit to the table of being able to achieve that, as well as being the installer too”.

USL’s DeckProtect+ system was used to protect the decks at Aberdeen (as well as Merryhill) and the hybrid nature of DeckProtect+, given the polyaspartic nature of the components, means the waterproofing is fast cure, very low odour, flexible as well as being colourfast and easier to clean”.

Tim Whittaker also goes on to say “having only been with the business for 2.5 years, I’d always considered that a manufacturer and contractor combined offering would be hugely attractive to prospective customers looking to refurbish their car park. USL are in the enviable position of being able to manufacture, supply and install concrete repair and corrosion mitigation products, anti-carbonation and protective coatings (Nufins in-house suite of products), a range of expansion joints as well as the now market leading DeckProtect+ car park deck coating system. In terms of the structural repair of car park structures therefore, USL can offer a truly compelling one-stop-shop solution, not just in terms of products, but in terms of installation too”.

USL StructureCare are also this year completing the structural repair of into Watford’s 4 No. car parks, which sees over 70,000m2

of the

DeckProtect+ system being used to protect the deck slabs from water, salt and carbonation ingress. Taylor importantly states “at Watford we are over-coating the existing MMA based system which we determined was satisfactorily adhered to the substrate. Repairs are being carried out beforehand as the coating was worn and debonded in many areas, however our DeckProtect+ system is ideal in such circumstances”.

Interestingly, USL are offering a unique CPD seminar and open day/ site tour at Watford on Tuesday 4th October 2016. Please see www. structurecare.com for more details.
