Timber Fossilised timber decking and cladding - using nature’s most successful preservation recipe
Asbestos was once considered a good idea - believe it or not!
That same learning curve has been happening to the chemical preservation of timber. From creosote to Arsenic, Chromium, and now Copper. As the use of biocide heavy metals continues to be lowered, mostly due to legislation, new eco-technologies emerge.
OrganoWood is the latest, and in our view the most interesting. Made in Sweden, OrganoWood mimics Nature’s fossilisation process by using Silica to create a physical barrier against fungal attack - rather than killing it!
Silica is a completely natural element, inert and incredibly abundant: silicate minerals, such as sand, comprise over 90% of the Earth’s crust.
A great bonus is that this chemical-free process also provides effective flame resistance. This new technology has been winning multiple awards in Scandinavia (including best Environmental Innovation), and it is not difficult to see why. It adds rot and flame performance to a 10 year guarantee and the complete peace of mind of a chemical free decking or cladding.
Schools are unsurprisingly the area where OrganoWood has been most eagerly adopted, although there are plenty of roof decks, marinas and other urban landscaping projects.
OrganoWood’s latest development is OW Premium: an extra top coat of their natural Silica solution which makes the timber water repellent. To watch droplets of water simply roll off the surface of the wood is simply mesmerising. This keeps the timber looking fresher, cleaner and newer for longer as it reduces the water absorption and therefore the swelling and shrinking which eventually makes it split and look tired.
Whether standard or premium, the timber has a natural colour and in time will weather to a beautiful silver grey, requiring minimum or no attention.

The children at this pre-school now have a non-toxic outdoor environment
In the Midsommarkransen pre-school, outside Stockholm, OrganoWood was specified for the outdoor play areas. This secured a non-toxic environment for the children to play - a priority identified by both parents and designers.
Sometimes you can see that sand boxes are built with chemically impregnated wood. Not many people realise the chemical exposure that children meet in pre-schools says Veronika Prince, a pre-school Director at Chestnut pre- school. Veronica also agrees it is a priority to provide a non-toxic environment for children.
“It is something we work continuously with. We serve organic food, to the children, among other things.” tells Veronica Prince

A large part of the external environment consists of decking in OrganoWood - an environmentally friendly wood preservative that also gives the wood an efficient flame retardant. “Our kids get a non-toxic outdoor environment”.
Micasa Fastigheter is the property manager for this pre-school and has the request that everything must be non-toxic and as maintenance-free as possible.
OrganoWood decking and cladding uses high grade Swedish softwood, free from harmful chemicals. It is more cost competitive than hardwoods whilst also offering fire resistance.
