News Opening day

for bug hotel HEADCORN has unveiled a new hotel - but you will have to be quick if guestswant to book a bed for the night. The Bug Hotel is the latest cre-

ation of Bloomin’ Headcorn – a group of gardeners and conserva- tionists creating a “Nature Garden” in Day’s Green. The volunteers have spent months creating a mini meadow near the playground. They removed a patch of original

turf, sowing wildflower seeds from the Kew Gardens’ Grow Wild Scheme.

Bloomin’ Headcorn member

James Hewitt put together a sturdy frame for the Bug Hotel whichwas filled with natural materials, leaves and twigs by visitors to the village. The plan is for the hotel to ac- commodate a whole range of bugs and minibeasts, so they can feed, sleep, hibernate and raise their off- spring. There are still a few sections of

the hotel which need to be filled – leaves, cardboard and straw make ideal homes for things such as lacewings, ladybirds, leaf cutter bees and woodlice. If you would like to help with fu-

ture projects, you can email bloom- inheadcorn@gmail.com

Ramraiders drive off with bank cashpoint

RAM raiders attacked the NatWest Bank in Staplehurst, rip- ping out much of the front of the building as the robbers left with the cash machine. Detectives cordoned off the site

where rubble, bricks and glass were strewn over the footpath and car park at the parade of shops, which includes a bookmakers and a wine merchants. It appears the cash machine was targeted in a similarway in 2007. Residents heard the sounds of

the machine’s mechanical arm bat- tering of the bank before the thieves left the scene in a 4x4 vehicle. The engine had been left running

at the scene. Kent Police appealed for infor- mation after the theft and would like to hear from potential wit- nesses. They said officers were called to

The Parade at about 3.30am, on July 22, after reports that a tele- scopic forklift truck had been used to remove the cash machine from the bank.

The boarded up bank in The Parade, Staplehurst According to police, the cash ma-

chine is reported to have then been lifted onto a flatbed vehicle, which left the scene and headed in the Cranbrook direction. This vehicle is believed to have

been a Landrover. Detective Inspector Gary Scarfe,

of Kent Police’s Serious and Or- ganised Crime Unit said: “The in- dustrial machinery used to prise

the cash point from the wall was left at the scene and we are follow- ing a number of lines of enquiry to identify those responsible. “Although this offence happened

in the early hours, we are appeal- ing for anyone with information who may not have come forward.” By the weekend, the bank’s

façade had been boarded up where the damage had been caused.
