GP’s affection for Hardy By Dennis Fowle
THE affection and deep knowledge Dr Tony Fincham has of Thomas Hardy’s Wessex shines through in his new book. Dr Fincham, sen-
ior partner in the Yalding Surgery, is immediate past chairman of The Hardy Society and a current vice-pres- ident. The 88-page
well-illustrated book will help guide visitors to Dorset and neigh- bouring West Country and also delight followers of one of Britain’s most respected au- thors. The book is a and
tourist
walker’s guide, es- pecially in and around Dorch- ester. It weaves in the Hardy stories and especially the fictional characters. Hardy created his own name places for hisWessex and the book includes
a fascinating guide to so many. “Exploring Thomas Hardy’sWessex” is published by The Dovecote Press (£7.95) and is available from Yalding Surgery.

Tracey takes on seas and terror
PUB landlady Tracey Leaver has taken a break from pulling pints to swim from Asia to Europe. The open-water swim enthusiast,
who helps husband Charles run the Chequers Inn at Laddingford, was among more than 2,000 swimmers to compete in this year’s Bosphorous Cross-Continental Swim. Tracey, who got hooked on open
water swimming after taking part in the Lake Windermere Great Swim seven years ago, set herself the chal- lenge as part of her 50th birthday year. The swim, organised by the Turk-
ish Olympic Committee, starts on the Asian side of Istanbul and ends on the European side of the River Bosphorous. The Bosphorous is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world andwas closed to traffic for the two- hour duration of the swim. Tracey competed the swim in
1hour 18 mins and 53 seconds and is pictured with her certificate. Until the 11th hour, the trip could
have been in jeopardy because of political unrest in Turkey. She said: “Two weeks before we
were due to leave, there was the at- tack on the airport and five days be- fore therewas the attempted coup. “A lot of people pulled out, but
about a quarter of us stillwanted to go, so the tripwent ahead. “It’s such a shame. The hotels are empty, yet the people are charming andwe felt very safe .” Although the 6.5km swim is not
the longest distance Tracey has cov- ered in openwater, itwas by far the most challenging. She said: “The current is very
strong and you have to have your wits about you.”
