Santa Rosa, CA. ~ I sometimes think I should design a Seussian garden, you know a whimsical gar- den I imagine Dr. Seuss (Theodore Seuss Geisel) having, probably not, but I envi- sion a kooky collection of fun and extraordinary plants. Drumstick allium, (Allium schoenoprasum) rising up from masses of purple, pink and white creeping thyme, wooly thyme and Corsican mint mingling throughout a flagstone path leading to a huge concrete bench partially planted with lush green, apple scented Roman chamomile, on the ground and under your feet too, unmistakable fragrance wafting in the air fill- ing your senses with pure delight. Gazing out you would see colorful zinnias and Shasta daisies popping up everywhere, Cat in the Hat topi- ary, Lorax and Horton sculptures, trees with colorful fruit, plump, sweet purple berries, tall, skinny palm trees and on and on. Let your imagination run wild for a few mo- ments! What would you see?! Ask your kids what they would see and to draw a picture of it. Encourage them to do some chalk art on the sidewalk! Get out the Dr. Seuss books or even pick up a few at a used book store or many of the used book stores on line. FUN!
ful’ month.
August is a wonderfully ‘fruit- I hope there are lots
of delicious edibles in your gar- den and you’ve experimented with some interesting and unusual seeds and plants that are now fulfill- ing your expectations. Keep the garden cleaned up to deter pests and feed everything with organic compost, fish emulsion and other organics to encourage healthy growth.
It might be time to visit Harmony Farms and stock up on a few things, meander through their nursery and pick up a few starts and seeds for yes, the Fall garden!!

Be inspired. Get a good book on canning, put up clear glass jars full of luscious fruits and veggies for winter that YOU grew in your or- ganic garden!!
Invite ladybugs into your garden
plants are only a few to help get you started attracting beneficial insects like hover flies, spiders and parasitic braconid wasps. Bacil- lus thuringiensis is safe and only kills caterpillars and bad worms.
Diatomaceous
to feast on aphids. Purchase online or in nurseries. Be sure and release them in the evening and make it a celebration so they can wake up in your garden and hopefully near aphids! Garlic, onions and garlic chives should be planted through- out the garden, even pots of them scattered about. Soapy water sprayed on the bad bugs and cat- erpillars using 1 tsp. of liquid dish soap to 1 gallon of water. Show no mercy since it’s you or them! Get some lemon balm planted; not only a delicious stress reduc- ing tea, it also attracts beneficial insects. Yarrow, marigolds, sweet alyssum, sweet basil and coriander
earth is great to wipe out ant colonies, slugs and snails but use sparingly as it can kill beneficial bugs too. Neem oil, my recent ‘must have’ can be sprayed on infested leaves and is a great preventative spray to use in the garden. Gardening is a science, an art and a passion. Stay organic and learn the or- ganic methods to stop the infestations of unwanted pests. Commercial bug sprays will kill ‘everybody’ good and bad poten- tially affecting your health as well. Gasp! Get physical! Hand pick- ing pests in the evening works too. Drop the bad guys in a bucket of salty water as you move through the garden, stars and planets twin- kling so far away in the dark sky above, cosmos stretching out for- ever.
COURTHOUSE SQUARE CLOSED TO THROUGH TRAFFIC BEGINNING EARLY AUGUST
Santa Rosa, CA.~ The City of Santa Rosa is preparing to permanently close the section of Mendocino Ave- nue between Fourth Street and Third Street. The road closure is part of the Reunication of Courthouse Square
which will create a central gathering place where residents and visitors can enjoy a wide variety of com- munity events in the heart of Santa Rosa. Jason Nutt, Director. (707) 543-3810 ~
