Vicar to employ his police past
A FORMER police officer is to be the new vicar at East Malling, Teston andWateringbury. Rev Nick Williams, pictured,
who was born in the Rhondda val- ley, Wales, will be installed officially in October. As an 18-year-
old he followed in his father’s foot- steps and became a police officer with the Metropolitan Police, where he worked for the next three decades. The experience appears to have
served him well for a life in the church. He told Downs Mail: “There are aspects between this job and the role of a police officer which are similar. “As a policeman, you see the
very best and the very worst of people and as a priest you also see the best and worst in people, too. “You see people in their grief and in their joy so itwas not a huge
transition from one to the other.” His roles in the Met saw him in community engagement as part of the counter-terrorism unit, the leader on the travelling commu- nity as well as being a uniformed sergeant in theWest End and south east London. After he had served his curacy at
the Holy Trinity church in Dart- ford, he became the vicar at St Mar- garet of Antioch in Darenth, but for the past five years he has been based at the Darent Valley Benefice. When the position at the East Malling job became available, he applied for it. Rev Williams added: “I have
takenmycurrent role as far as I can take it and it now needs a fresh pair of eyes”. He said that the opportunities in
his new parish are “absolutely tremendous”. RevWilliams is married to Fiona
and they have teenage sons aged 15 and 14. They will live at the vic- arage in East Malling.

Mereworth Community Children’s Choir are preparing for their produc- tion of Oliver! The musical in the autumn
Choir strikes festive notes
CHRISTMAS is coming early for the members of Mereworth Commu- nity Children’s Choir. The choir, launched in September
2013, will be recording a CD of Christmas carols and songs in Octo- ber along with some special guests – including the organist of Wake- field Cathedral! Rev Patricia Dickin, priest in
charge of Mereworth and West Peckham, set up the choir soon after her appointment. She said: “I saw a real need for children to have access to a community group that was free, where they could access varied music, while also reaching into the large variety of contempo- rary Christian music.” The choir began with just a hand-
ful of children, most of whom are still members, and their first per- formance for Christmas that year had just eight children singing. Now there are 24 children on the
register, aged between 7 and 13, who rehearse every Wednesday during term time at Mereworth Church, under the leadership of choir director Stephen Thomas. The choir is currently rehearsing
for a special production of “Oliver! The musical”, which will be per- formed in Mereworth Church on Sunday, September 18 at 4pm. The event is free (retiring dona-
tions welcome), and is particularly suitable for parents and children whomay be considering joining the choir.
