Allotment holders plan to take on tool thieves

GARDENforks, spades and rakes are being security marked with different coloured paints in a bid to help allotment holders deter thieves. The colour coding scheme - demonstrated right by PCSOs Susan Leng and Ross McMillan - is being used throughout Tonbridge and Malling to help police identify stolen items and return them to their rightful owners. Each allotment which takes part

is allotted a specific colour to be used on valuable items and tools. Plot holders are then also assisted by PCSOs to etch their own post- codes into tools. Ten allotments have already signed up. PC John Fordham of Tonbridge

and Malling Community Safety Unit said: “The intention is to make it easy for officers and plot holders to identify which allot- ment a tool is associated with, should it be stolen. Historically it has proved very difficult to match stolen items to their rightful own- ers, because the tools often have little in the way of distinguishing features.”

Malling July 2016 23 Officers are encouraging others

who want to take part in the scheme to get in touch. PC Fordham said: “Working alongside Allotment Watch we will be expanding this initiative throughout Tonbridge and Malling later this year. “It will also make it harder for

criminals to sell them on at places like car boot fairs. Both the paint and the etching will not only be difficult for criminals to remove but also very time consuming. “This is a simple way of protect-

ing your property but we are hopeful it can also be very effec- tive at cutting crime.”
