downsmail.co.uk Hopes high for steeple
THE Friends of Wateringbury Church have launched a major fund-raising campaign to help re- pair the church steeple. The spire of St John the Baptist Church in Tonbridge Road is clad in wooden shingles, which have come to the end of their useful life. The cost of repairing the spire (pictured rtght) is expected to top £70,000 and the Friends have launched a ‘sponsor a shingle’ cam- paign to raise at least £10,000. There are 14,000 cedar shingles
on the spire which the Parochical Church Council hopes to replace with oak. Each shingle costs £1 to sponsor,
although the actual cost is £5 each to replace when installa- tion costs are taken into ac- count. Any number can be purchased. Those buying
a shingle will have
their names recorded
in a commemorative book. Friends’ secretary Frances Eng-
lish said: “This is a generational legacy project for the community andwe hope that many will choose
Pupils’ Kwik Cricket triumph
KINGS Hill Primary School youngsters batted and bowled their way to victory in the Tonbridge and Malling Kwik Cricket Festival. Around 200 young cricketers made up 19 teams from
13 primary schools in the annual tournament, which was hosted by Kings Hill Sports Park. Kings Hill’s first team, pictured right with Tonbridge &Malling Mayor Cllr Mark Rhodes, beat Ightham Primary’s third team in the final. Six 14 to16-year-olds currently taking part in a young
cricket leaders programme, along with 13 pupils from Aylesford Sports College and some of the borough’s com- munity cricket coaches, helped with scoring and umpir- ing.
to support it. Buying a shingle and being a part of the project is not confined to the parish community – anyone iswelcome to join in.” The Friends have already raised
£8,500 towards the project and hope that £1,500 can be raised quickly so that work can start later this summer. Otherwise, it will be in spring 2017. To sponsor a shingle, email
