A new route to cleaning up the city
Life at the Chamber is hugely varied because our members are diverse – large and small and from all sectors. But there are some issues raised with us which are of great concern to every member and, with one of these in mind, I spent a couple of hours at an event supporting the launch of a new Council initiative. The Leader of the Council, Frank McAveety,
announced the establishment of an Environmental Task Force (ETF). Businesses hate seeing Glasgow clogged up with litter and waste, and this is one of the most common complaints when we have our member discussions with the Council Leader.

DRIVERLESS CARS – A TANGIBLE OPTION? I enjoy driving my own car as much as anyone. I appreciate the convenience and the comfort but how long this will be an option in our city? In the Queen’s Speech, it was suggested that driverless cars will move from being science fiction fantasy to a tangible option for the future. Driverless cars – or autonomous vehicles – are
already being tested and used on the roads in parts of the United States. So how are we preparing for this future in Glasgow?

YOUR INTERNATIONAL CHAMBER One of our main priorities this year is to increase our international connections. We want to help our members in building business overseas and we have long felt that the international network of Chambers of Commerce is an asset that we should be using more intensively. We got a flavour of just how extensive the network is when we competed at the World Chambers Competition last year in Turin. We have therefore announced an agreement we have reached with the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce to deepen our relationship.

MANUFACTURING – AN INTENSIVE DEBATE REQUIRED The recent problems of the UK steel industry have resurrected an old debate about the role of manufacturing in our economy. For Glasgow these are well-worn arguments, with our heavy engineering largely gone for years. While the sale of Clydebridge and Dalzell is warmly welcomed, the impact of the steel industry on the city’s economy is not what it was. The same can also be said for shipbuilding, although Jim McColl is having a right good go at bringing Ferguson into the 21st century, and we

BIG CHANGE AFOOT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW The University of Glasgow’s plans for a £1bn extension of the Gilmorehill campus have taken another step forward with the handing over of the former Western Infirmary site. The majority of the extension will be on that site – a rare opportunity to develop 15 acres of land right next to the University, in the heart of the west end.
