ALL THINGS INTERNATIONAL
Chamber events are opening up the doors to global trade
» The International Trade Forum is supporting the export of goods and services
I
n addition to the exciting news about the Memorandum of Understanding with Manhatan Chamber of Commerce, Glasgow Chamber of Commerce has been
busy with a range of events designed to support businesses wishing to achieve global growth. Working with our International Trade
Partner, Clydesdale Bank, we recently held an International Trade Forum which looked at the issue of Intellectual Property Trolls. Euan Duncan, Partner in Intellectual Property and Commercial Contracts at MacRoberts LLP, was our guest speaker and with more than 20 years of experience advising on intellectual property he was well placed to advise on the issues businesses should consider when exporting goods and services. Intellectual property trolls (“IP Trolls”)
are individuals or institutions that acquire portfolios of trade marks, patents or domain names without the intention of using them in the normal course of commercial business. IP Trolls can cause businesses huge problems both financial and legal. Euan is very well known in a number of industry sectors which are “IP rich” including food and drink, manufacturing, life sciences, creative industries, fashion and textiles, soſtware and offers that can advise all manner of commercial contracts from supply to agency, distribution to retail, sponsorship to endorsement and everything in between. Our International Trade Forums are held
every two months and provide the perfect opportunity for our international trade members to network, discuss their challenges and experiences, as well as hear from global businesses and stakeholder organisations.
BEHIND THE SCENES INTERNATIONAL In May, we held the first of our Behind the

Scenes International events at Andrew Muirhead and Son Ltd. Part of the Scotish Leather Group, Andrew Muirhead is the largest manufacturer of leather in the UK. Teir leathers are used for a wide range of industries including aviation, automotive, marine and furniture and their export sales represent more than 80 per cent of their turnover. Te delegates atending heard an excellent presentation from Managing Director, Colin Wade, and then were given a tour of the factory where they saw the many stages of production that are required to take the hides from their unrefined state to the finished article ready for distribution around the world. Te tour sparked a lively question and answer session prior to a light networking lunch. Our Behind Te Scenes International events
offer the opportunity to share the challenges and successes of trading globally and are supported by Clydesdale Bank.
DUBAI AIRPORT FREE ZONE AUTHORITY
Rounding off a busy time on all things international, we held an event with representatives from the Dubai Airport Free Zone Authority. Te 45 delegates atending heard about how to set up a business in Dubai and the business benefits of doing so as a result of exemptions from corporate, income and foreign company ownership taxes. Tis event, which we delivered in partnership with British Chambers of Commerce, served to underline our commitment to working with Dubai, one of our six key target international markets.
