20 . Glasgow Business June 2016
INTEL Jamie Cumming, Commercial Director, Hillington Park
Each issue we ask a major business figure what technology they use to gather the information they need to keep their finger on the pulse
A few simple essentials to keep complex asset running
» iPhone, bespoke software, news feeds... and good old-fashioned etiquette
WHAT TECHNOLOGY (FROM GADGETS TO SOFTWARE, INCLUDING APPS) MAKES YOUR WORKING LIFE EASIER?
Simple but I live by my iPhone calendar and task list – they keep me in check at work and at home. Hillington Park is a complex asset and we use a lot of bespoke management soſtware systems to keep things running smoothly and me informed of all of our important commercial activity. We also have a fantastic piece of soſtware for tracking our website activity and it gives us very valuable insight in to who’s looking and how we’re performing. Our marketing team use social and digital channels to keep in touch with our customers and stakeholders.
WHAT WEBSITES/APPS/MAGAZINES/ NEWSPAPERS DO YOU TURN TO FOR BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE?
I get daily sector knowledge news feeds which keep me up-to-date with Scotish property news but I also read weekly journals from Property Week and Estates Gazete to get a national view of what’s happening in our sector. Commercial property can be influenced
by so many factors; the strength of the economy, legislative changes, political events, infrastructure and even employment. With more than 500 businesses across such a wide range of sectors on Hillington Park we need to absorb as much knowledge as we can so we can shape our asset management strategy and plan for future growth across our portfolio.
WHAT BOOK(S) SHOULD EVERYONE IN BUSINESS BE READING?
I don’t get a lot of time to read books but when I’m in the car (which is oſten) I listen to podcasts and audio books to get my fix. I like Dale Carnegie’s ‘How to win friends and influence people’. It has been around a long time but I think it still stands true in today’s business world. Property is a real people business and I think strong interpersonal skills are essential if you want to succeed.
WHAT DO YOU DO THAT HELPS YOU BOOST YOUR PRODUCTIVITY OR SAVE TIME?
I like to keep a task list and set targets Jamie Cumming,
Commercial Director, Hillington Park
and that works best for me. Like most people nowadays I literally get bombarded with emails every day so I adopt a simple approach to action, delegate or delete – I would sink otherwise. I’m not afraid to delete an email from someone marked urgent – they usually aren’t. I like to keep meetings structured and to the point and I also try and keep as healthy as possible.
WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?
My grandmother was 100 earlier this year. She’s always been a big advocate of etiquete and she programmed us with it when we were children. In professional life I think it is one of the most important atributes an individual can have and I continue to use those lessons every day in life.
