HOMES & GARDENS / GARDENING
Faversham Open Gardens&
The largest open gardens event in the South East
returns, plus jobs to do in the garden this month
Garden Market Day T
he biggest town ‘open gardens’ event in the South East – the 2016 Faversham Society Open Gardens & Garden Market Day – takes place on Sunday 26th June from 10am to 5pm. With around 30 gardens and a similar number of garden-related market stalls, this is now the largest open gardens event in South East England, and attracts visitors from all over Kent, London and further afi eld.
Faversham Open Gardens & Garden Market Day is a chance to see what lies behind the historic houses of this market town. Most gardens are within walking distance of each other and this, combined with the Garden Market in the picturesque Market Place, gives the town a festival air on the day, with garden
visitors exchanging greetings in the streets when they spot each other’s Open Garden handbooks.
The event has been designed to
offer an enjoyable day out for families or groups of friends – there are plenty of cafes, pubs and restaurants within easy walking distance and some gardens offer home-made teas. There is also a Hunt the Golden Pebble competition for children. The day is a Faversham Society event
(
www.favershamsociety.org), raising money to help the Society to protect the historic buildings and their environment. • Tickets are £6 each or two for £10 (to include one handbook only). Available from Faversham Society, the Fleur-de-lis Heritage Centre, 15-17 Preston Street, Faversham ME13 8JL as well as The Market Place on 26th June.
4 THINGS TO DO IN THE GARDEN
1. This is the perfect time to put out all your containers, brimming with colour. Window boxes offer a lovely way to enliven a property and its inhabitants. 2. Put in your stakes to support fl oppy plants before they romp away. It will spoil their shape if you wait too long. 3. Try to mow your lawn once per week – it’s good exercise, a great way to keep in tune with your garden and will make everything look wonderful. 4. June is such an amazing month in the garden, simply take time to sit back, smell the fl owers and enjoy the labours of all your hard work.
